Space42 and Telkomsat Partner to Expand 5G Direct-to-Device Services

5G satellite direct-to-device partnership

The UAE-based space technology company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia’s national satellite operator to explore Direct-to-Device connectivity. Through this agreement, the partners will examine how satellite and terrestrial 5G networks can work together seamlessly. As a result, the collaboration targets new and underserved markets that lack consistent coverage. Moreover, the initiative aims to extend connectivity without relying on traditional ground infrastructure.

The partnership draws on Equatys, a direct-to-device venture created with a global satellite communications provider. Through this platform, the companies plan to support a converged communications experience across satellite and terrestrial systems. At the same time, the collaboration aligns with broader ambitions to close connectivity gaps worldwide. Consequently, it supports the goal of enabling access where networks remain limited.

Technology framework and collaboration scope

Announced in September 2025, Equatys focuses on a 3GPP Release 17+ Non-Terrestrial Network framework. Under this model, standard smartphones and IoT devices can connect directly to satellites. In addition, the platform supports more than 100 MHz of harmonized Mobile Satellite Services spectrum. Therefore, it aims to extend seamless 5G access across more than 180 markets.

Under the memorandum, both parties will explore technical integration for direct-to-device and satellite-enabled services. For instance, they will assess infrastructure alignment to enable smooth handovers between terrestrial and satellite networks. In parallel, they will define benchmarks for latency, bandwidth, and reliability. Furthermore, the collaboration will address regulatory compliance, spectrum coordination, and data privacy standards. Research and development will also play a central role, with joint labs, pilot programs, and field trials planned. Finally, the partners will consider shared product road maps and infrastructure investments as the platform scales globally.

Toward a new model for universal connectivity

Equatys operates as a shared “space tower” company using a multi-tenant model. Through this approach, it reduces redundant capital expenditure while delivering cost-efficient capacity to multiple operators. Additionally, the architecture supports three market segments: direct-to-device, IoT, and mobile satellite services. As a result, the model promotes scalability and infrastructure-grade performance.

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42, stated that, “Equatys represents the future of global connectivity, tackling existing gaps that leave billions unserved by terrestrial networks. By partnering with Telkomsat, we continue to expand our ecosystem and advance our shared vision of universal connectivity. The move builds on Space42’s standing as a global leader in non-terrestrial networks and highlights the power of collaboration in ensuring users and devices can access next-generation, sustainable connectivity.”

Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf, CEO of Telkomsat, remarked that, “Satellite-based connectivity will remain a key element in the national network architecture, particularly to ensure reliable communications in remote areas as well as for the country’s strategic needs. Telkomsat remains committed to delivering inclusive and sustainable services for all communities.”

By integrating scalable infrastructure with accessible regional markets, the partners aim to move from concept to commercialization. Ultimately, the collaboration seeks to deliver hybrid connectivity that supports digital economies, enterprise innovation, and inclusive growth.
