Saudi Aramco partners with Samsung to bring 5G localization to their industrial operations

Saudi Arabian oil company, Saudi Aramco, has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korean electronics company Samsung to collaborate on the localisation of the industrial 5G technology ecosystem in Saudi Arabia. The collaboration is expected to begin with the establishment of private networks in the kingdom and contribute to the digital transformation of various industrial sectors such as energy, petrochemicals, and manufacturing.

According to a statement from Saudi Aramco, the proposed collaboration will leverage advanced 4G and 5G technologies capable of providing secure, fast and reliable communications to satisfy the business-critical requirements of industries. The collaboration is also expected to advance industrial 5G use cases with mission-critical communications.

The agreement is part of Saudi Aramco’s digital transformation strategy, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of digital technologies and services in the Kingdom and the wider Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. In January 2023, the Saudi-listed firm launched Aramco Digital Company, which will oversee its digital transformation initiatives.

The proposed collaboration with Samsung is expected to support the development of 5G in Saudi Arabia, which has set ambitious targets to become a global leader in the adoption and deployment of 5G technology. The move is also in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the country’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil by promoting the development of high-tech industries.
