Samsung presented a range of foldable device concepts at CES 2022, including smartphones and laptops in S- and G-shaped designs.
Foldable concept designs
The ‘S’ design features three panels that fold out to make a larger tablet-like device, while the ‘G’ designs fold inward on all sides, allowing the device to be stored away without scratching the screen.
During a presentation at CES, Samsung showcased the Flex Note that can be converted from a 13-inch tablet to 17 inches when fully expanded and the Flex Slidable smartphone with a display that extends to the side.
The Flex S is a tri-folding setup that opens up in an ‘S’ shape, allowing for a significant expansion of the screen. The Flex G panel, which also has three panels, features an inward fold that offers additional protection to the display and offers enhanced protection as the device can be folded twice.
The Flex Note is a prototype laptop that transforms into a larger monitor when unfolded. The Flex Slidable features a hidden screen that is released with a push of a bottom on the top left-hand corner. When the button is depressed, the screen slides to the right and displays the user’s apps while allowing work to continue on the larger screen to the left.
Budget flagship phone
The Galaxy S21 FE offers similar technology to the Galaxy S21 smartphone family, but for USD 100 less. The new phone offers a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen, the same processor as the traditional flagship devices, a triple-lens camera, and 5G capability.
Dr. Tae Moon Roh, president and head of Samsung Electronics, said in a statement, “We saw an incredible response to Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy S21 lineup. So we applied the same approach with S21 FE 5G, equipping it with the premium features that matter most to our loyal Galaxy fans — because we’re focused on delivering a smartphone that meets their most important needs.”
The Galaxy S21 FE is available in a range of colors including olive, graphite, lavender and white. The handset’s battery can receive a 50% charge in just 30 minutes and Samsung claims “all-day” battery life.
The Galaxy S21 FE will ship on January 11.
