The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully rolled out a Smart Monitoring System to oversee driving school operations. Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department, this initiative is part of RTA’s broader push toward smart, sustainable mobility and regulatory innovation.
The system uses AI-powered cameras to monitor instructors and trainees inside vehicles. Over just seven months, it recorded 1,734,790 training sessions involving 245,764 trainees a 14-fold increase compared to the previous year. This growth highlights the impact of digital oversight on operational efficiency.
Notably, the system has reduced average inspection times from 20 minutes to only one minute. At the same time, recorded violations have increased fivefold. These results demonstrate the system’s value in boosting both productivity and compliance within the training process.
Advanced Technology Drives Real-Time Oversight
Installed directly in driving school vehicles, the smart cameras operate around the clock. They leverage AI and computer vision to detect violations in real time. As a result, instructors and trainees are monitored more thoroughly and consistently than ever before.
The system automatically flags several infractions. These include using mobile phones, skipping seat belts, leaving designated training areas, and ignoring uniform standards. It also detects distractions such as eating, drinking, or sleeping while driving.
Because inspections are now conducted through smart tablets, field inspectors can manage their duties more efficiently. This streamlined process not only enhances supervision but also supports Dubai’s long-term goal of building a connected, intelligent transport system.
Shaping the Future of Driver Training Oversight
Looking ahead, RTA plans to integrate predictive analytics into the system. Moreover, instructor performance data will soon be linked with licensing and permit platforms. These updates aim to create a smarter, data-driven monitoring model.
“This Smart Monitoring System represents a transformative shift in how driving school operations are supervised, establishing a proactive and technology-driven approach to training oversight,” said the authority.
RTA also emphasizes that the success of this initiative depends on collaboration with training institutes and their staff. Therefore, the agency encourages all partners to strictly follow safety and operational protocols.
By enabling real-time oversight and fostering institutional accountability, the Smart Monitoring System is raising the bar for driving instruction across Dubai. It represents not just a technological upgrade but a step forward in public safety and service excellence.
