Perplexity Launches Personal Computer System for Mac Users
Initially, the system debuted on March 11 during an inaugural developer conference in San Francisco, where CEO Aravind Srinivas outlined a broader vision for AI-native computing. At that time, access remained limited, as users had to join a waitlist instead of using the product immediately. However, five weeks later, the system became available to paying customers, marking a rapid transition from preview to launch.
“A traditional operating system processes commands; an AI operating system focuses on goals,” Srinivas said at the event, according to Axios.
Moreover, the system integrates directly with a Mac application, which allows secure coordination across local files, native apps, and web browsers. As a result, users can manage tasks more efficiently without switching between environments.
Capabilities and System Design
Notably, the system runs continuously on a dedicated Mac device, especially a Mac mini, so it remains active in the background. It can search, read, and write files locally, while also interacting with native applications like iMessage, Mail, and Calendar. In addition, users can start tasks remotely from an iPhone, and two-factor authentication protects the connection.
Furthermore, the system uses around 20 advanced AI models, which means it selects the most suitable model for each task. Because of this approach, it improves both accuracy and efficiency. At the same time, built-in safeguards enhance user control, including a kill switch, required confirmations, and a detailed audit trail. Therefore, users retain oversight even as automation increases.
Pricing, Access, and Competition
Currently, access requires a top-tier subscription priced at $200 per month, which positions the product at the premium end of the market. Meanwhile, a lower-priced plan does not include this system, although it supports a cloud-based alternative introduced earlier. Consequently, users must weigh cost against functionality when choosing between options.
Looking ahead, enterprise versions are also in development, which suggests broader adoption across organizations. At the same time, the launch places the system in direct competition with other agentic AI solutions, including OpenClaw. As competition grows, the market continues shifting toward AI systems that prioritize goals over manual commands.
