OpenAI is entering the AI browser race, following Perplexity’s lead with its own AI-powered browser, codenamed “Aura.” The discovery came from an X user, Tibor, who spotted multiple references to “Aura” in the ChatGPT web app. These mentions include terms like “is Aura,” “is Aura Sidebar,” and “in Aura,” suggesting the browser’s integration into the existing ChatGPT ecosystem. Consequently, it appears OpenAI is actively developing this new browsing experience.
A Chromium-Based Browser with Advanced AI Features
According to previous reports by Reuters, OpenAI aims to build a Chromium-based alternative to Google Chrome. This new browser will leverage generative and agentic AI capabilities to revolutionize web browsing. Interestingly, OpenAI has also shown interest in acquiring Chrome if the ongoing antitrust trials between the US and Google turn unfavorable for Google. However, whether this acquisition will happen remains uncertain. For now, OpenAI is focused on launching its browser across all platforms, benefiting from Chromium’s cross-platform compatibility and readiness.
Complementing the Browser with Cutting-Edge AI Models
Besides Aura, OpenAI is simultaneously working on its next-generation GPT-5 model. This new model will merge advances from previous iterations to offer a superior user experience. Moreover, OpenAI is experimenting with embedding computer agent support within ChatGPT’s “chain of thoughts,” although specific details are still under wraps. These efforts reflect OpenAI’s broader vision to integrate advanced AI capabilities into daily digital interactions.
