OpenAI Plans ChatGPT-Shopify Integration for Seamless Shopping

OpenAI appears to be preparing a new feature that would let users shop through ChatGPT using Shopify. According to TestingCatalog, recent code strings in ChatGPT’s public web bundle point to terms like “buy_now,” “price,” “shipping,” and “shopify_checkout_url.” These references suggest that OpenAI is planning a native integration, rather than relying on third-party plugins.

This integration could allow users to make purchases without ever leaving the chatbot. If implemented, the feature may function much like a shopping app, embedded directly into ChatGPT. Since the code has been spotted in production assets, a release could be right around the corner.

A Shift Toward Seamless E-Commerce Within ChatGPT

Naturally, this move is raising eyebrows. On one hand, users could find this seamless shopping experience highly convenient. Instead of jumping between websites, people might simply ask ChatGPT for a product, review the offer, and purchase it, all in one place. On the other hand, some users on X voiced concerns. While a few are excited about ChatGPT evolving into a multipurpose tool, others questioned OpenAI’s direction. One comment sarcastically noted that the AI promised to transform civilization, but now it’s upselling protein powder.

Previously, OpenAI had tested plugins for third-party services. However, those were eventually scrapped due to serious concerns, including the risk of prompt injection attacks and malicious payloads. Given the backlash from developers, OpenAI seems to be shifting to direct partnerships, which might improve safety and user trust.

This move also places OpenAI in line with competitors. Microsoft has already integrated shopping tools into its ecosystem through the Copilot Merchant Program. Similarly, Perplexity launched “Buy with Pro” to streamline purchases. It’s no surprise that ChatGPT is exploring similar territory.

Meanwhile, Shopify is all-in on AI. CEO Tobias Lütke even issued a company-wide memo stressing that AI use is now a baseline expectation. Teams must now explain why a task requires human input before hiring. Clearly, Shopify’s culture aligns with this new collaboration.

If successful, the partnership could redefine what people expect from conversational AI. It’s not just about chatting anymore—soon, it might be about checking out, too.
