OpenAI Launches Lightweight Version of ChatGPT Research Tool

OpenAI unveils lightweight ChatGPT tool for faster, efficient online research access.

OpenAI has introduced a new “lightweight” version of its deep research tool for ChatGPT. Designed to compile research reports by scouring the web, this updated feature is now available to Plus, Team, and Pro users. Notably, free users will also gain access starting today, expanding the tool’s reach significantly.

Although it’s a scaled-down version, the lightweight deep research is powered by OpenAI’s o4-mini model. While slightly less advanced than the original, it remains capable of producing insightful responses. Importantly, OpenAI says it is more cost-efficient to run. As a result, the company can raise usage limits across all supported plans.

According to OpenAI, responses from the lightweight tool will generally be shorter. However, the depth and accuracy are expected to remain consistent. Furthermore, once users reach the limit for the full version, the tool will automatically switch to the lightweight one ensuring uninterrupted research functionality.

Rising Competition Among AI Research Tools

OpenAI isn’t alone in enhancing its research capabilities. Over the past few months, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and xAI’s Grok have all introduced similar tools. These platforms rely on reasoning AI models, which are engineered to evaluate information and self-correct making them well-suited for handling complex research topics.

As users seek tools that can understand context and verify facts, lightweight research tools are quickly becoming standard features in top-tier AI offerings. OpenAI’s decision to broaden access is clearly a response to this growing demand.

What’s Next for Enterprise and Education

Enterprise and educational users aren’t left out. OpenAI has announced that these user groups will receive access to the lightweight research tool starting next week. They will enjoy the same usage levels currently offered to Team subscribers, ensuring parity across organizational plans.

Ultimately, this rollout reflects OpenAI’s ongoing effort to balance performance with accessibility. By offering a lighter, more efficient model, the company makes advanced research tools available to a wider audience without sacrificing the core value of depth and reliability.
