OpenAI Launches GPT Image 2 Model Upgrade
OpenAI introduced GPT Image 2 on Tuesday, marking a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s visual generation tools. Moreover, the release follows the earlier GPT-4o image feature introduced in March 2025. The company signaled the launch earlier in the day, and then confirmed it at noon Pacific time.
The model replaces GPT Image 1.5, which debuted in December 2025. In addition, anticipation had built for weeks due to anonymous testing on LM Arena. During early April, three codenamed models gained attention for their output quality and consistency. As a result, expectations for the official release increased significantly.
Core Improvements and Capabilities
GPT Image 2 introduces a full architectural redesign rather than a minor upgrade. Consequently, it operates on a standalone system instead of the earlier GPT-4o image pipeline. Text rendering accuracy improves substantially, rising from roughly 90–95 percent to over 99 percent. Furthermore, the model supports multiple scripts, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.
The update also resolves prior visual inconsistencies. For instance, the earlier warm yellow color cast no longer appears in generated images. Meanwhile, resolution capabilities expand significantly, with support for outputs up to near 4K. Although higher resolutions remain experimental above 2K, the model still delivers a clear step forward.
Additionally, GPT Image 2 supports new aspect ratios such as 16:9. Therefore, it becomes more suitable for presentations, thumbnails, and video content. Generation speed also improves, as outputs now appear in under three seconds in many cases. In comparison, earlier versions often required five to ten seconds.
Market Position and Availability
The launch arrives as competition in AI image generation intensifies. Meanwhile, rival models already offer high-resolution outputs and improved photorealism. At the same time, the planned shutdown of earlier OpenAI image models increases the importance of this release.
GPT Image 2 is now rolling out to ChatGPT users, and it will also be available through the API under the identifier gpt-image-2. However, one limitation remains at launch. Transparent background support is not yet included, so certain workflows still rely on the previous model.
