OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Group Chats Feature

ChatGPT group chat feature interface on mobile.

OpenAI has begun rolling out a new feature called group chats, marking the first shared multi-user experience inside ChatGPT. The feature allows users to create a shared chat space and invite others for collaboration, planning, decision-making, or everyday conversations with AI support.

The rollout is currently limited to selected regions, although it will expand to more locations based on user feedback. Furthermore, group chats can be accessed by both free and paid ChatGPT users.

How group chats work and key controls

Users can start a group chat by tapping the people icon in any new or ongoing conversation. A generated link can then be shared with others, allowing up to 20 people to join. If a group is created from an existing chat, a copy is generated so the original conversation stays separate.

Additionally, members are asked to set up a profile with a name, username, and photo for easier identification. Group chats appear in a dedicated sidebar section for quick access. The creator can add or remove members, while participants can rename the chat or mute notifications at any time. Users can also tailor ChatGPT’s behaviour with custom instructions that apply only to that specific group.

Features, model selection, and privacy

ChatGPT adapts its responses to the flow of discussion and only replies when relevant. It can be invoked through mentions, react with emojis, and reference profile photos. The system uses GPT-5.1 Auto to automatically select the most suitable model available to each user, so response quality can differ depending on subscription tiers. Moreover, group chats support web search, image and file uploads, image generation, and dictation.

Personal ChatGPT memory is not used in group chats, and no memory is formed from shared messages. Members can leave a chat anytime, and only the creator cannot be removed by others. If any participant is under 18, content filters are automatically activated for everyone. The feature is currently in pilot phase and available in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan for all logged-in users.
