OpenAI Introduces Animated Desktop Pets in Codex App

Animated coding pet overlay interface

OpenAI introduced an update to its Codex coding app, adding optional animated desktop pets. Notably, these companions hover over developers’ screens while tasks run in the background. As a result, users can quickly check progress without reopening threads.

Users can type “/pet” in the composer to activate the feature. Then, a small floating overlay appears and reflects task status. For example, it shows whether Codex is running, waiting for input, or ready for review. Consequently, developers gain a more visual and immediate way to track activity.

Customization and Creative Options

Moreover, the pets act as lightweight notification tools that display updates in real time. The app includes eight built-in companions, which users can select through appearance settings. In addition, each option offers a distinct visual style, making the experience more engaging.

For those seeking personalization, the platform offers a “hatch-pet” feature. After installing it, users can run the “/hatch” command with a custom prompt. As a result, they can generate unique animated companions using image tools. However, full customization requires an API key. One example included a custom pet inspired by a desktop icon, paired with a short message.

Growth, Strategy, and Context

Meanwhile, Codex continues to grow as a key part of the company’s developer ecosystem. According to Sam Altman, the tool has reached millions of weekly users. Furthermore, a premium subscription tier now offers expanded usage compared with lower-priced plans.

At the same time, external developers have begun building additional pet options for the platform. Therefore, the feature has already sparked a small ecosystem of creative extensions.

Interestingly, the update follows a recent adjustment to the model’s behavior. Just days earlier, the company addressed an unusual tendency involving fantasy-related language. Nevertheless, the pet feature embraces a playful tone. As a result, it reinforces the coding tool’s identity rather than shifting away from it.
