OpenAI plans to introduce a payment checkout system inside ChatGPT, according to the Financial Times. The system would allow users to make purchases directly through the chatbot interface. As part of the setup, merchants fulfilling those orders would pay a commission to OpenAI.
This move could open up a new revenue stream for the company. Currently, OpenAI relies mainly on subscriptions. However, with heavy traffic on ChatGPT, monetizing transactions could offer significant growth. The checkout feature is still under development, but OpenAI and partners like Shopify have already shared early versions with brands. Discussions over financial terms are also underway.
No comment from OpenAI or Shopify
Despite the interest surrounding this feature, neither OpenAI nor Shopify provided comments. The companies have kept the rollout process mostly under wraps. Yet the project appears to be gaining momentum behind the scenes.
Earlier this year, the two firms announced a partnership. That news came soon after OpenAI launched an upgraded shopping tool that showcases product listings and reviews more clearly within ChatGPT. As of now, suggested items appear as links to external retailer sites.
Revenue surges despite past losses
According to OpenAI, its annualized revenue run rate hit $10 billion in June 2025. That number reflects a strong leap from $5.5 billion in December 2024. Still, the company reported a loss of around $5 billion last year.
If this new system succeeds, it could further strengthen OpenAI’s business model. While the chatbot continues to expand in features and reach, adding native checkout might deepen user engagement and improve long-term profitability.
