Muscat: Ooredoo has officially launched the Salalah Data Centre and Submarine Cable Landing Station, a major project aimed at strengthening Oman’s position as a regional digital hub. Strategically located in the Dhofar region, Salalah links Asia, Europe, and Africa through its proximity to multiple global subsea cable systems. Consequently, the site is emerging as a critical node for international connectivity.
The facility is the first in southern Oman to combine a class 3 compliance data centre with a submarine cable landing station. Initially, it can house 125 full server racks, and it will expand to 500 racks in phases. By supporting next-generation cloud, AI, and edge computing services, the centre sets a new benchmark for digital infrastructure in the country.
“The data centre and landing station is a catalyst for Oman’s digital future,” said Saed Al Ghafri, director of infrastructure at Ooredoo. “It reinforces our role in driving economic diversification, attracting global digital investment and enabling the next wave of cloud and AI innovation. By creating a southern gateway for international connectivity, we are strengthening Oman’s position as a regional leader in the digital economy and unlocking long-term value for businesses, communities and the wider region.”
Enhancing Connectivity, Resilience, and Economic Growth
By creating a secure southern gateway for international cables, the project reduces latency, improves network resilience, and provides faster, more reliable connections. In addition, it is expected to attract global operators, hyperscalers, and cloud providers to Oman. This influx will boost the local economy and create new job opportunities.
The advanced design supports enterprise IT hosting as well as cutting-edge digital services. As a result, businesses and governments across the region can access faster, more secure, and locally hosted cloud and content delivery solutions.
Strengthening Regional Networks and Future-Ready Technology
The Salalah hub will also enhance Ooredoo’s broader regional network. Other Ooredoo operating companies can leverage the facility to land traffic, host cloud services, and share digital infrastructure. Therefore, the group creates synergies while expanding its global digital footprint.
With its integrated design, future-ready technology, and strategic location, the Salalah Data Centre and Submarine Cable Landing Station represents a major step toward achieving Oman Vision 2040. Moreover, it reinforces Ooredoo’s commitment to innovation, resilience, and customer-focused digital services across the sultanate.
