Oman Partners with Airbus to Develop OmanSat-1 Satellite

Oman has taken a major step toward enhancing its space and telecommunications ecosystem through a new agreement to design, manufacture and launch the nation’s first communications satellite, OmanSat-1. The project forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen digital sovereignty, expand advanced infrastructure and build long-term capabilities in future technologies. Moreover, the initiative supports the country’s vision to create resilient systems that ensure secure and independent communication services.

The satellite will feature high-capacity Ka-band coverage that reaches Oman, its economic waters and several regions across the Middle East, East Africa and Asia. Additionally, it will rely on a fully digital, reconfigurable platform that allows performance adjustments while in orbit. This adaptability is meant to support diverse applications, improve system efficiency and ensure long-term service continuity for both government and private-sector users.

As outlined in the agreement, Space Communications Technologies (SCT) will manage operations of OmanSat-1 and also act as the executive arm during design and manufacturing. Furthermore, a dedicated Project Management Office has been established within SCT to oversee technical and administrative aspects, ensure infrastructure readiness and coordinate an integrated operational ecosystem that supports satellite services after launch.

Strengthening National Capabilities

The OmanSat-1 initiative plays a key role in enhancing Oman’s digital resilience while promoting secure telecommunications and data services. Additionally, it aims to expand national coverage, improve service quality and support critical-sector continuity under all circumstances. These goals align with the country’s broader strategy to advance future-oriented communication systems and encourage the development of high-value technological solutions.

The project also contributes to local capacity building through extensive training programs designed to equip national talent with specialized skills across all stages of the satellite’s lifecycle. Moreover, it supports participation from local companies, particularly SMEs, enabling them to take part in the project’s supply chain and strengthen their role in the national space economy. Collaboration with academic institutions further enhances scientific research and technological advancement in the space sector.

Expanding the National Space Ecosystem

OmanSat-1 stands as a central component of the National Space Strategy (2023–2033), which aims to position the country as a regional hub for space services and emerging technologies. Additionally, the initiative supports national economic diversification goals by fostering innovation-led growth and scaling advanced technical capabilities across key sectors.

The project aligns with several national efforts, including satellite launch initiatives from Duqm Port, capacity-building programs, accelerator projects and geospatial development activities. Together, these elements form a fully integrated ecosystem that drives the expansion of Oman’s space economy and strengthens its long-term technological competitiveness. The next-generation Ka-band satellite will provide flexible, high-performance services that support essential industries and contribute to the country’s digital transformation.
