Nvidia and MediaTek Collaborate on Energy-Efficient Desktop CPU

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has revealed plans for a new desktop CPU co-designed with MediaTek, unveiled at CES 2025 as part of Nvidia’s Project DIGITS. The desktop CPU, created with a focus on energy efficiency, marks a strategic collaboration between the two companies, offering MediaTek the ability to market the chip independently while Nvidia incorporates it into its products.

The Project DIGITS computer, priced at $3,000, features Nvidia’s advanced “Blackwell” AI chip and runs on a Linux-based operating system tailored for AI developers. Although not targeted for mass-market consumers, the machine represents a stepping stone for Nvidia’s broader plans in the desktop CPU market.

During an investor presentation, Huang stated, “This partnership is a win-win, allowing MediaTek to serve the broader market while providing us with a cutting-edge CPU.” While he withheld specific details about future developments, Huang confirmed that Nvidia has significant plans for the desktop CPU.

Additionally, Nvidia is exploring ways to bridge the gap between Linux and Windows operating systems for AI developers and consumers. Using Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux, Nvidia aims to create mainstream products that support professional-grade software, enabling seamless use of both systems on a single computer.
