Nissan Honda Advance Next-Generation SDV Software
Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. have signed a joint development agreement to standardize key electronic control units and software for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The agreement, announced on August 31, 2026, expands their strategic partnership around vehicle intelligence and electrification.
Common Architecture for Software-Defined Vehicles
Under the agreement, Nissan and Honda will establish common specifications for multiple core electronic control units (ECUs). These units form a central part of the electrical and electronic architecture in future vehicles.
Additionally, the companies will jointly develop an in-vehicle operating system and key middleware components. They will also work on vehicle control software that runs on the shared ECU architecture.
The companies plan to apply the jointly developed electrical and electronic architecture to their next-generation SDVs starting in fiscal year 2029. However, Nissan and Honda have not disclosed specific vehicle models that will use the technology.
Focus on Development Costs and Speed
Meanwhile, software has become a major competitive factor as automakers add AI, connectivity, automated driving, and advanced digital functions. Therefore, Nissan and Honda view shared software development as a means to improve research and development efficiency.
By standardizing foundational technologies, the automakers expect to combine engineering expertise and development resources. As a result, they aim to shorten development cycles and reduce costs through greater economies of scale.
The companies also identified SDV technology as an important area for strengthening competitiveness. Furthermore, they said that faster technological change requires faster R&D and more efficient investment.
Building on Earlier Cooperation
The agreement follows earlier efforts to deepen cooperation between Nissan and Honda. In August 2024, the companies agreed to jointly research fundamental technologies for next-generation SDV platforms.
However, the latest agreement moves the relationship toward specific shared technologies. Earlier discussions also covered areas including EV components and automotive software platforms.
Going forward, Nissan and Honda said they will continue exploring additional areas of cooperation. Consequently, the companies aim to leverage their combined resources to develop new technologies and improve efficiency and competitiveness.
