In a landmark deal reshaping the mobile gaming industry, Scopely is set to acquire Niantic’s gaming division for $3.5 billion, bringing globally renowned titles like Pokémon Go, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now under its portfolio.
This acquisition further strengthens Scopely’s position as a mobile gaming powerhouse, adding to its portfolio of blockbuster IP-driven games, including Monopoly Go!, Star Trek Fleet Command, and Marvel Strike Force.
The Future of Pokémon Go Under Scopely
Scopely will not only take over Niantic’s gaming titles but also its companion services, Campfire and Wayfarer, which enhance player engagement and community interaction. Niantic’s gaming division currently boasts over 30 million monthly active players and generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2024.
Despite the broad scope of the acquisition, Pokémon Go remains the highlight of the deal. The augmented reality (AR)-powered game has redefined mobile gaming by blending digital experiences with real-world exploration. With over 20 million weekly active players, Pokémon Go continues to dominate the industry, hosting large-scale live events that attract millions of participants worldwide.
According to Ed Wu, Senior VP of Pokémon Go, Scopely’s commitment will further enhance the game’s live events, battles, and social features.
Scopely’s Vision for Niantic’s Legacy
Tim O’Brien, Chief Revenue Officer and Board Member of Scopely, emphasized that Niantic’s games have built a unique global community. He highlighted how Pokémon Go reached over 100 million players in 2024, with in-person events drawing massive crowds. O’Brien expressed confidence that Scopely’s resources and expertise in live-service games would help maintain and expand Niantic’s success.
Niantic’s Shift to AI and Spatial Computing
Following the sale, Niantic will pivot its focus to AI and spatial computing. The company will rebrand as Niantic Spatial Inc., a geospatial AI company led by founder John Hanke. Niantic Spatial will continue to operate Ingress Prime and Peridot, independent of Scopely.
Hanke stated that Niantic’s mission to inspire exploration and social interaction will continue under Scopely’s leadership, ensuring its titles remain “forever games” with long-term player engagement.
With this acquisition, Scopely is set to redefine the future of AR gaming, leveraging its live-service expertise to enhance Pokémon Go and other Niantic titles while expanding its footprint in the global gaming market.
