Uber has launched a new feature in Saudi Arabia that allows passengers to request female drivers. The “Women Drivers” option enables women riders to be matched only with female drivers, without any change in pricing or service quality compared to UberX. This marks a notable step forward in the conservative kingdom’s social transformation.
Although Saudi women have been legally allowed to drive since 2018, the Uber app did not offer a gender-specific ride category until now. By introducing this option, Uber enhances both safety and comfort for riders. In addition, it opens more opportunities for Saudi women to work as drivers, supporting their financial independence.
Responding to Shifting Social Norms and Travel Needs
The introduction of this feature aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to promote gender inclusion. According to the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA), female travelers accounted for 44% of the kingdom’s international visitors last year roughly 13 million people. As the STA continues to improve safety perceptions for women travelers, services like Uber’s new feature play a supportive role.
Recent reforms have also helped change daily life for women. For instance, gender segregation rules in restaurants were eased in 2019. In 2021, women gained the right to live independently without a male guardian’s permission. By 2024, the country had introduced women-led tours, reflecting its commitment to expanding women’s freedoms.
A Step Toward Inclusive Mobility
Uber’s new initiative not only addresses practical concerns but also reflects changing societal expectations. The company noted that this service supports economic empowerment and gives women riders more control over their travel experiences. Moreover, it contributes to a more inclusive transportation landscape within the kingdom.
As Saudi Arabia continues reshaping its image and infrastructure, the move underscores how both public policy and private innovation can work together to drive meaningful change.
