Microsoft Unveils ‘Project Helix’ as Next Xbox That Plays PC Games

Xbox Project Helix console concept

Microsoft Gaming has unveiled “Project Helix” as the codename for its next-generation Xbox console. The upcoming device will support both Xbox and PC games, signaling a major shift in the company’s gaming hardware strategy.

The announcement came from Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, who introduced the project and highlighted its performance capabilities. The next console aims to combine console gaming with the flexibility of PC platforms.

“Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games,” Sharma said, adding that she is “looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios” at the Game Developers Conference next week.

A Console and PC Gaming Hybrid

Industry reports earlier this year suggested that the upcoming console could run on Windows 11. As a result, the device may support games from multiple digital storefronts, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Meanwhile, AMD is developing the processor expected to power the console. The chip, internally known as “Magnus,” continues to progress toward a potential launch timeline around 2027.

In addition, the new console is expected to maintain full backward compatibility with Xbox One and Xbox Series titles. Therefore, players could access existing libraries while also gaining entry to PC-based game platforms.

Leadership Changes and Strategic Direction

The announcement arrives shortly after Asha Sharma took over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. She replaced longtime Xbox chief Phil Spencer and signaled a renewed focus on hardware and gaming experiences.

Moreover, the early reveal indicates a push to strengthen the Xbox platform. The gaming division has faced increasing competition from Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 and Sony’s anticipated PlayStation 6.

Further details about Project Helix may emerge during the Game Developers Conference 2026, scheduled from March 10 to March 14 in San Francisco. In addition, Microsoft is expected to showcase more announcements during a future Xbox Games Showcase later this year.
