Microsoft is broadening access to Copilot+ PC features, bringing key AI-powered tools to devices powered by Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD Ryzen AI 300 processors. This move ends Qualcomm’s exclusive hold over these capabilities, but not all Intel- and AMD-based PCs will support them.
The rollout, which began Monday, extends these features to all x86-based Copilot+ PCs from manufacturers like HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Asus. Microsoft plans to gradually introduce them to users through the March 2025 Windows non-security preview update and a controlled feature rollout over the next month.
Why Not All Intel and AMD PCs Will Qualify
Despite this expansion, only Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD Ryzen AI 300 chips currently meet Microsoft’s 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) requirement, thanks to their built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
This means that PCs with Intel Core Ultra 200U or AMD Ryzen 200 series processors will not receive Copilot+ PC features unless Microsoft changes its requirements.
Still, the update marks a significant shift by extending these AI-powered capabilities beyond Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processors, which exclusively supported Copilot+ PCs when the program launched in June 2024.
Microsoft New Updates for Qualcomm-Based PCs
While Intel and AMD users gain new AI capabilities, Microsoft has also enhanced features for Qualcomm-powered Copilot+ PCs.
A new Voice Access update, included in Windows 11 version 22H2, improves hands-free control. This feature, which uses NPU acceleration, allows users to operate their PCs with more flexible and descriptive voice commands.
However, this update will not be available on x86-based systems until later this year.
Microsoft Copilot+ PC Features Coming to Intel and AMD Devices
Microsoft has confirmed that the following Copilot+ PC features will be available for Intel Core Ultra 200V and AMD Ryzen AI 300 users:
-
Live Captions – Provides real-time English translations for audio and video, including meetings, podcasts, and video playback.
-
Cocreator in Paint – Enhances sketches with AI-generated artwork based on text prompts.
-
Restyle Image (Microsoft Photos) – Applies different artistic styles to images.
-
Image Creator (Microsoft Photos) – Generates visuals based on detailed prompts.
Features Still in Development
While the Copilot+ expansion is a major step, some AI-powered tools remain in testing.
One of the most anticipated features, Recall, was initially expected to be the flagship capability of Copilot+ PCs. Recall takes screenshots every few seconds, allowing users to search their PC’s history using natural language.
However, Microsoft delayed its release due to privacy and security concerns. The company is now adding security measures, including Windows Hello authentication and virtualization-based security, before a planned launch in early 2025.
Additionally, Microsoft plans to introduce a second wave of Copilot+ features, including:
-
Click to Do – A contextual overlay for AI-assisted actions.
-
Enhanced Windows Search – AI-powered search improvements.
-
Super Resolution – AI-based photo upscaling.
These features will first launch on Qualcomm-based PCs in early 2025, followed by Intel and AMD PCs in mid-2025.
What This Means for Users
With Microsoft expanding Copilot+ PC capabilities, more users will benefit from AI-driven features on Intel and AMD-powered devices. However, the most advanced capabilities—such as Recall—will require additional security enhancements before widespread availability.
For now, Microsoft’s move signals a shift toward AI-enhanced Windows experiences, with Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD all playing key roles in the future of Copilot+ PCs.
