Meta has launched a dedicated AI app, expanding its AI assistant beyond platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Announced during the company’s LlamaCon event, this new app mirrors the function of popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, yet aims to stand out through deeper personalisation. Since Meta already holds extensive user data from years of engagement on its social media platforms, it hopes to deliver uniquely tailored AI interactions that rival its competitors.
Unlike other assistants, Meta AI can respond based on a user’s profile, past activity, and preferences shared across Meta’s platforms. This personalised experience, initially available in the U.S. and Canada, allows users to receive context-aware answers. For instance, if you’ve posted frequently about travel, the AI may offer vacation tips aligned with your interests. Furthermore, users can manually provide extra details such as dietary restrictions for even more accurate suggestions in future interactions.
Personal Data Powers Smarter Responses
Although the added personalisation offers convenience, it also raises concerns about how data is used. Like with other AI products, users are advised to stay informed about Meta’s data practices. The company’s advertising model heavily depends on user data, which means the information shared with the AI could ultimately influence the ads users see. However, Meta claims that users have control over what the AI remembers and how it’s used, including the ability to delete saved data.
To enhance the user experience further, the app introduces a Discover feed. This feature allows people to share their interactions with Meta AI such as playful requests to describe themselves using three emojis. Notably, content is only posted publicly if users choose to share it. This social twist could fuel new AI trends, similar to viral filters like the Barbie or Studio Ghibli look-alikes, which spread quickly across platforms.
Blending Social Sharing with AI Utility
Although the Discover feed adds a fun, community-driven aspect, it remains optional. The core of the app is still designed to offer meaningful and intelligent assistance. Whether you’re planning a trip or seeking daily advice, Meta AI aims to respond with context-aware suggestions shaped by who you are and what you’ve shared. With this move, Meta is clearly positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the evolving AI assistant space.
