Meta Platforms has hired the founders and full team behind the AI startup Dreamer. As a result, the move marks another step in its push to build advanced AI agents. The acqui-hire was announced Monday in an internal post by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. Consequently, the Dreamer team will now join the Superintelligence Labs division.
The deal brings co-founders Hugo Barra, David Singleton, and Nicholas Jitkoff into the company. Notably, Barra previously served as a Google vice president for Android product management. Later, he led the Oculus VR division before leaving in 2021. Meanwhile, Singleton worked as chief technology officer at Stripe and held engineering leadership roles at Google. In addition, Jitkoff contributed as a design lead for Chrome OS.
However, the agreement focuses only on talent rather than technology. Dreamer’s tools were not included in the deal. Earlier, the startup raised $56 million in late 2024 at a $500 million valuation. At the time, Wang was among its investors. Furthermore, Dreamer launched its beta platform in February 2026. It positioned itself as an “operating system for AI agents” that allowed anyone to build custom agents using natural language.
Expanding the AI Talent Strategy
The newly hired team will work on personalized, always-on AI agents. These agents will operate across the company’s platforms and wearable devices. Moreover, they will report directly to Wang within Superintelligence Labs. He co-leads the division with former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
At the same time, this move reflects a broader hiring strategy. Since mid-2025, the company has aggressively pursued AI talent. Wang joined during a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, which accelerated this effort. Subsequently, the company acquired Chinese AI startup Manus in a deal valued at over $2 billion. In addition, it has recruited researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Some compensation packages have reportedly reached nine figures.
Competition in the AI Agent Race
Meanwhile, the hiring underscores intensifying competition in AI development. The company is competing with major players to shape the future of AI-powered software. Therefore, acquiring skilled teams has become a critical strategy.
Earlier in March, Singleton spoke at the Upfront Summit about Dreamer’s vision. He described a platform where “anyone can build, discover and enjoy AI agents”. However, that vision will now evolve within a much larger organization. Consequently, the direction of Dreamer’s ideas may expand under broader resources and scale.
