Meta debuts Surreal AI-powered Video Editing Tool

Meta has released a new short video editor powered by its Movie Gen AI technology. This marks the first commercial tool based on the research previewed last year. The editor allows users to dramatically alter clothing, location, and style in just seconds no advanced skills required.

Although you can’t yet write custom prompts, the tool includes more than 50 preset options. Users can instantly transform subjects into a comic book character, marble statue, or even a video game avatar. In addition, scenes can shift to places like snowy landscapes or sunny beaches. You can also apply lighting effects and color overlays for added atmosphere.

While Movie Gen originally focused on research, its consumer debut is turning heads. Unlike traditional video editors, this one lets users alter existing footage instead of starting from scratch. That flexibility makes it stand out, especially since the effects are increasingly close to Hollywood-level CGI.

Realistic Effects Within Seconds

Even though this is just the beginning, the results already look polished. Meta’s examples include dancers transported into dreamlike settings clouds swirling around them or dramatic lighting that shifts the tone entirely. Moreover, the changes apply seamlessly, which gives videos a surreal but cinematic feel.

The AI editor doesn’t just alter existing videos. Movie Gen technology can also turn still images into animated content or generate entirely new video clips. As these features develop, they are likely to appear across Meta’s suite of consumer tools, including social platforms.

Where and When to Try It

Right now, the new tool is available through the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, and the Edits app. However, Instagram integration is expected soon. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, hinted at this last year and recently shared a demo. The preview showcased several dramatic effects that users can try, confirming that Meta’s vision of AI-driven creativity is already arriving.

As the editor rolls out, more features including custom prompt support are planned for later this year. With this launch, Meta continues to position itself at the forefront of user-friendly creative AI tools.
