MBZUAI deepens AI Research Collaboration with France

MBZUAI and École Polytechnique teams collaborating on AI research in Paris.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is set to strengthen its research partnership with France in 2025. This move follows a deepening relationship with École Polytechnique, formalized through a new Collaborative Research Agreement. As part of the initiative, mission-driven research will be led by key investigators from both institutions, focusing on cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence.

In particular, the collaboration will explore areas such as large language models, reasoning-based foundation models, and AI applications in biology, health, and safety. These topics are central to the evolving global AI landscape. Additionally, this partnership serves as a strategic pathway to foster impactful research that benefits both the UAE and France.

According to Professor Eric Xing, President of MBZUAI, this agreement offers more than academic collaboration. “Our partnerships and presence in France are critical to the continued growth and innovation of our research capabilities,” he noted. He emphasized that the expanded agreement represents a broader blueprint for international cooperation in AI development.

A Multi-Layered Partnership

The strengthened relationship builds on a foundation laid earlier this year. In February, MBZUAI and École Polytechnique signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on education, innovation, and research. Just two months later, the institutions launched a Scholars Exchange Program Agreement. This program enables the exchange of students and researchers, allowing both parties to benefit from shared expertise and academic resources.

Laura Chaubard, Director General of École Polytechnique, expressed enthusiasm about the growing alliance. She highlighted several overlapping interests, including AI for health, safety, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the partnership aims to accelerate innovation in large-scale AI systems.

Paris-Based Presence Strengthens Research Ecosystem

MBZUAI’s collaboration with France is also reinforced through the MBZUAI France Lab in Paris. This local hub plays a vital role in maintaining a consistent research presence within Europe. As the university deepens its strategic footprint, it aims to inspire the next generation of researchers and contribute to global breakthroughs in AI.

Together, these efforts underscore a shared vision: advancing artificial intelligence responsibly while fostering innovation through international cooperation.
