LG reveals Car Display that Transforms into Tactile Buttons

LG's shape-shifting automotive display morphs into buttons for enhanced usability.

At SID Display Week 2025 in San Jose, LG presented a bold innovation in automotive tech. Their new stretchable display, designed for electric vehicles, aims to blend form and function like never before. Mounted at the vehicle’s centre fascia, the screen can stretch up to 50% while retaining full RGB colour fidelity and a resolution of 100 ppi. This allows it to shift from a flat panel to a tactile surface with physical buttons.

Unlike standard automotive displays, LG’s technology introduces dynamic adaptability. With a simple touch, the smooth surface morphs into raised buttons, enhancing ease of use during driving. As a result, the need for traditional physical controls could soon be eliminated. LG claims this solution can turn nearly any interior surface into a high-quality display, merging minimalism with practical control.

This innovation not only improves functionality but also creates a cleaner design. More importantly, it reflects the growing trend toward integrated, intelligent vehicle systems. LG’s display makes interacting with cars more intuitive, especially for those driving next-generation electric vehicles.

Enhancing Safety and Entertainment

Beyond transforming buttons, LG is also prioritising in-car safety. The company has developed a privacy mode that allows passengers to view content invisible to the driver. This feature ensures the driver stays focused on the road while others access apps or stream videos. Such measures are especially useful as more vehicles incorporate large shared displays.

Additionally, LG introduced a massive 57-inch Pillar-to-Pillar OLED screen. Stretching across the entire dashboard, this is currently the largest of its kind. While the 57-inch version is new, LG has already supplied a 40-inch version to automakers, confirming its practicality. These wider screens could redefine the layout of modern car interiors, offering both a premium aesthetic and advanced functionality.

Looking Ahead to Smarter Interiors

LG continues to explore flexible display options for different parts of the vehicle. One of the standout innovations is an 18-inch Slidable OLED designed for rear-seat passengers. This screen retracts into the car’s ceiling when not in use and is built to withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C.

This display evolution signals a shift in how automakers may approach cabin design. With adaptability and performance at the core, LG’s technology is positioning itself to become a standard feature in high-end electric vehicles. If widely adopted, it could transform car interiors into more engaging, safer, and intuitive spaces.
