Kia PV5 Tech Day Highlights Future of Smart Mobility

Kia Corporation hosted the Kia PV5 Tech Day at IVEX Studio in Gwangmyeong, unveiling the development story, core technologies, and the strategic vision behind its first dedicated Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), the Kia PV5. Aligned with Kia’s global goal to deliver sustainable mobility solutions, the PV5 enters mass production equipped with customer-driven product development and advanced platform engineering.

Themed “Technology that adapts, mobility that expands,” the event underscored Kia’s mission to offer flexible, future-ready mobility that transcends traditional commercial vehicles. This initiative not only strengthens Kia’s leadership in sustainable innovation but also sets new standards for the evolving PBV market.

Customer-led development for maximum usability

Kia developed the PV5 through a PBV-exclusive approach that integrated real-time customer insights at every stage. Rather than relying solely on traditional surveys, Kia collaborated directly with global business clients to shape the vehicle’s hardware and software. As a result, feedback from events like the PBV Partners Day in 2022 and 2023 helped prioritize practical features. These included the removal of the front passenger seat for more cargo space, the use of stain-resistant materials, and a walk-through design in High Roof versions for seamless cabin-to-cargo access.

In parallel, Kia focused on accessibility by working with mobility-impaired users to co-develop the PV5 WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle). This variant includes a gentle-sloped ramp, universal securing systems, and a spacious low floor. The goal was clear deliver a vehicle that meets underrepresented mobility needs.

These customer-driven improvements reflect Kia’s three-pronged strategy: minimize total cost of ownership, specialize in PBV-focused development, and build a scalable ecosystem across hardware and software. Together, these pillars form the foundation of Kia’s PBV roadmap.

Modular platform technology for adaptable performance

The PV5 is built on Hyundai Motor Group’s first dedicated PBV platform Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service (E-GMP.S). This new architecture, derived from the proven E-GMP technology, simplifies development by standardizing batteries, motors, suspension systems, and underbody structures using Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA). Therefore, by maximizing module commonality, Kia can scale and adapt designs more efficiently across different PBV segments.

Key Power Electric (PE) components are positioned in a designated PE room, allowing for a low-floor design and increased cabin space. Moreover, the driver’s seat is placed further forward to maximize utility. Safety is also a priority; the structure includes ultra-high-tensile steel elements, multi-skeletal crash protection, and wider buffer zones to protect the battery and occupants in all conditions.

For better serviceability, Kia designed modular brackets that simplify maintenance, directly reducing long-term ownership costs for fleet operators. In addition, its PBV-specific software ecosystem including a fleet management system and Android Automotive-based infotainment allows real-time vehicle monitoring and updates.

Battery and motor systems have been tailored for specific operational needs, offering three battery configurations: 43.3 kWh LFP, 51.5 kWh NCM, and 71.2 kWh NCM, each paired with a 120 kW motor delivering 250 Nm torque. These configurations support various customer use cases while improving cost-effectiveness.

Flexible Body System: building-block modularity for real-world versatility

Kia’s Flexible Body System, introduced with the PV5, modularizes major body and interior components to enable efficient production of multiple variants. The front cabin and first-row structures remain standardized, while rear modules, roof heights, and glass panels can be swapped like puzzle pieces. As a result, Kia can offer up to 16 PV5 variants using just a limited set of modular assemblies.

The seven initial base variants include passenger (long), cargo (standard, long, and high roof), with configurations built by combining modules. For example, the cargo long variant is created by shifting the rear overhang module and inserting a long-body module. That same platform can be converted into a passenger model by swapping out panels and glass, showcasing the system’s modular efficiency.

To enhance repairability and customization, Kia added dual-layer composite rear garnishes. These three-piece panels can be replaced individually without removing the entire rear structure. This design not only reduces repair costs but also supports market-specific customization.

Additionally, NVH performance and durability are improved using a ring-type exoskeletal frame for the rear. Long Body variants receive a dual-ring structure for added rigidity. Even exterior design benefits from modularity; standardized steel panels are shared across versions, reducing manufacturing complexity without sacrificing style.

Flexible space, seamless modularity

With E-GMP.S and the Flexible Body System combined, the PV5 delivers unmatched versatility and interior space. Despite its compact C-segment length (4,495mm standard, 4,695mm long), the PV5 features a generous 2,995mm wheelbase and low-floor design, maximizing cargo and passenger capacity. Passenger models provide up to 3.6 m³ of cargo space with second-row seats folded. Importantly, a tight 5.5-meter turning radius ensures easy navigation in urban environments. Seat layouts vary from 2-3-0 to 2-2-3 and 1-2-3, offering flexibility for both passengers and goods.

Step heights as low as 399mm at the sliding door and 419mm at the tailgate provide easy access for all users, including children and older adults. Cargo long models offer up to 4.4 m³ of space, while High Roof versions reach 5.1 m³. Additionally, walk-through features and foldable passenger seats further support business applications. Kia Genuine Accessories such as a luggage-flattening deck or cargo-floor leveling kit enhance storage convenience. Extra features include USB ports, sliding trays, and large door pockets, all designed to improve usability.

The PBV-specific infotainment system, built on Android Automotive OS, includes business-focused apps from the Pleos App Market. It supports body control functions and connects with the open-source AddGear platform. AddGear enables cabin-mounted tools like payment terminals and smartphone holders. External add-ons like roof racks and L-Track interfaces complete the system, offering a comprehensive digital ecosystem for business use.

Additional features like pedal misapplication prevention and auto-locking doors boost safety and ease of use.

Conversion-ready by design

The PV5 was developed from the ground up to support seamless conversions. The PBV Conversion Center launching alongside production will offer factory-grade modifications that match Kia’s core vehicle standards in safety and durability. Base donor vehicles come pre-prepped, eliminating non-essential elements and including dedicated control units and power access points. This significantly simplifies the integration process for Kia’s partners.

To support these modifications globally, Kia created the Conversion Portal System. This platform offers technical documentation, real-time assistance, and secure access to design data, allowing partners worldwide to develop high-quality, certified conversions. With scalable components and a streamlined conversion process, Kia empowers users to build vehicles tailored to their operational needs and lifestyles.

Production begins with more to come

Kia has now begun mass production of the PV5 Passenger and Cargo Long variants, with more versions rolling out in stages. Looking ahead, the PBV lineup will expand with the launch of the larger PV7 in 2027 and PV9 in 2029.

These upcoming models underscore Kia’s long-term vision to establish PBVs as a central pillar of its growth strategy. By merging real-world user input with scalable, software-driven platforms, Kia is setting the foundation for a flexible, sustainable mobility ecosystem.
