Kaspersky makes Free Anti-Malware Software just for Linux

Kaspersky launches free malware support for Linux

Kaspersky, a global cybersecurity leader founded in 1997, has protected over a billion devices worldwide. The company transforms its deep threat intelligence and security expertise into innovative solutions and services. These protect businesses, critical infrastructure, governments, and consumers from evolving cyber threats. Kaspersky’s comprehensive security portfolio includes leading endpoint protection, specialized security products, and Cyber Immune solutions. Over 220,000 corporate clients trust Kaspersky to protect what matters most to them.

Cybercriminals increasingly target Linux-based devices, evidenced by recent malware like DinodasRAT and the Trojanized Free Download Manager. To help Linux users stay protected, Kaspersky released a free product: Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool for Linux. This tool allows users to check their Linux computers for threats and clean them effectively.

Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool for Linux is a free application that scans Linux-based OS computers for threats. It can detect malware, adware, and legitimate programs that can be used for attacks. The tool scans system memory, startup objects, boot sectors, and all files in the operating system, including archived ones. However, it doesn’t have an automated antivirus-database updating mechanism. To recognize the latest threats, users must download a fresh version of the program from Kaspersky’s website each time. The package is updated several times a day.

Maher Yamout, Lead Security Researcher at Kaspersky, says, “There’s a common myth that Linux is mostly immune to threats. As Linux gains traction in the desktop market, the threat landscape is growing. The number of exploits and attacks is likely to increase, underscoring the need for patches and reliable security solutions. By releasing a free tool for Linux, we aim to help more users stay safe. Organizations should use specialized security solutions like Kaspersky Next product line.”
