KACST Launches Chipathon Hackathon for AI Semiconductor Innovation

Students designing AI semiconductor chips

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology has launched the second edition of the “Chipathon” hackathon focused on electronic chip design. The event is organized by Academy 32 in partnership with the Saudi Semiconductors Program.

The initiative aims to strengthen national talent in the semiconductor industry while improving the Kingdom’s readiness in this strategic sector. According to KACST, 50 university students advanced to the current stage after competing against more than 1,000 applicants.

Organizers divided the selected participants into 15 teams to develop electronic chips for artificial intelligence applications. Moreover, the competition environment mirrors real industrial working conditions.

Students Receive Intensive Semiconductor Training

Before the competition began, participants completed a 20-hour preparatory course covering semiconductor physics and chip fundamentals. Afterward, they joined an intensive 50-hour training program focused on integrated circuit design and practical applications.

During the four-day hackathon, teams are designing SRAM memory units for AI accelerators using industry-standard design tools. At the same time, participants aim to reduce power consumption, improve data transfer rates, and accelerate data access performance for AI systems.

In addition, teams are working to improve read and write accuracy while maintaining operational stability and efficiency. Organizers will evaluate projects based on innovation, design quality, and teamwork performance. Therefore, the event encourages students to combine theoretical learning with hands-on engineering experience.
