Instagram Tests Picture-in-Picture Mode for Reels Viewing

words each) for your article: Instagram Reels Picture-in-Picture mode

Instagram is rolling out a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels to select users. This feature allows users to watch Reels in a small floating window, even after closing the app. Consequently, viewers can multitask while enjoying short-form videos on their devices, similar to YouTube’s PiP functionality.

Limited Rollout and User Access

The new feature was first spotted by app researcher Radu Oncescu on Threads. Instagram’s parent company, Meta, confirmed to TechCrunch that PiP mode is available for a limited test group. If your account supports the feature, a pop-up appears stating, “Try picture in picture. Turn this on to continue watching reels in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram.” Users who wish to disable it can tap the three-dot menu while watching a Reel and turn off the toggle named “Picture in Picture.”

Currently, the rollout is limited, and Instagram has not shared a timeline for wider availability. A few months ago, Instagram head Adam Mosseri mentioned that PiP mode for Reels would be introduced soon, responding to a question, “When will IG offer PIP like TT and YT?” While TikTok and YouTube have offered this functionality for some time, Instagram had not implemented it until now.

Benefits for Creators and Viewers

PiP mode could boost both engagement and video retention. By allowing users to continue watching Reels while replying to texts, ordering food, or using other apps, Instagram might increase overall app time. Furthermore, creators posting long Reels could benefit from this feature, as viewers can follow their content without interruption. In turn, this may help creators retain their audience more effectively and enhance user experience.
