Google Vids Adds AI Avatars and Free Consumer Editor

Google Vids editor with AI avatars

Google introduced its video editor Vids last year as part of the Google Workspace suite. Now, the company is rolling out AI avatars, transcript trimming, and image-to-video generation. These updates make video creation more accessible, especially for users who lack the time or budget for traditional production.

The AI avatars allow users to input a script, choose from different voices and personas, and generate a complete video. Google first announced this feature at Google I/O in May, releasing it in beta. With its general availability, Workspace customers can now integrate it into their workflow.

To improve editing, Google added a tool that detects filler words such as “um” and “ah” along with long pauses. Users can simply click on them to remove the interruptions, and the software adjusts the video seamlessly.

Additionally, the company has brought image-to-video generation from its Veo 3 model to Vids. This enables the creation of short clips up to eight seconds long, expanding the creative possibilities within the editor.

Consumer Version With Limited Features

Alongside enterprise upgrades, Google is launching a free consumer version of Vids. While this edition offers basic editing tools, templates, fonts, and access to a stock media library, it will not include AI-powered features.

This step makes Vids more approachable for casual creators who need quick edits or simple video projects. Still, advanced AI-driven capabilities remain exclusive to business and education tiers.

What’s Coming Next

Google said it is also developing noise cancellation, Google Meet-style backgrounds, and flexible sizing formats such as portrait, square, and landscape. Although these additions have no confirmed launch date, they signal an effort to make Vids competitive with both consumer apps and professional platforms.

The latest updates place Vids alongside other AI-driven video tools from startups like Synthesia and D-ID. By offering similar avatar-based production options, Google aims to strengthen Workspace while opening the door for everyday creators through its free edition.
