Google is rolling out real-time AI video features with its Gemini platform. The new Gemini Live functions now allow select Google One AI Premium subscribers to have the system “see” their screen or smartphone camera feed in real time. Google confirmed via spokesperson Alex Joseph in an email to The Verge that these capabilities have been integrated nearly a year after the first demonstration under Project Astra.
A Reddit user recently spotted the feature on a Xiaomi phone, with video evidence shared on 9to5Google and Reddit. This rollout is one of two Astra-powered features for Gemini Advanced Subscribers. The other capability enables real-time video analysis, where Gemini interprets the live feed from your smartphone camera and can answer questions about what it sees. In one demonstration video, a user asks Gemini for advice on choosing a paint color for freshly glazed pottery.
This launch reinforces Google’s leadership in AI assistants, even as competitors like Amazon prepare early access for its Alexa Plus upgrade and Apple delays the upgraded Siri. Meanwhile, Samsung continues to use Bixby, but Gemini remains the default assistant on its devices.
