Google Photos has upgraded its image-to-video functionality with the launch of Veo 3. Available in the mobile app’s Create tab, this feature allows U.S. users to transform still images into video clips. With Veo 3, the company aims to deliver higher-quality video while integrating its latest AI technology into consumer-facing products.
The service builds on the existing “Photo to video” feature, which lets users create six-second clips using Veo 2. Users could previously choose between “subtle movements” or a surprise animation via the “I’m feeling lucky” option. Now, Veo 3 enhances that experience, making it easier to animate older photos or bring memories to life.
How Veo 3 Works
Veo 3 videos in Google Photos remain free with a limited number of generations, while AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers get access to more. Unlike some other models, these videos are four seconds long and do not support audio. The model ensures users can share AI-generated content conveniently without visible watermarks on most clips.
Previously, Veo 3 was introduced in the Gemini app as part of AI Ultra and AI Pro subscription plans, where users could generate three videos daily, each carrying both visible and invisible AI identifiers. The Google Photos integration brings this capability directly to the broader user base.
Creative Tools and Features
The Create hub within Google Photos offers users multiple AI-powered creative tools. In addition to Veo 3, the hub includes a remix option to change a photo’s style, create collages, build montages, generate cinematic 3D photos, and make GIFs from images. These additions aim to enhance the way users interact with their photos and share memories in dynamic ways.
