Google is reportedly considering the addition of an AI text-to-image generator to its Gboard keyboard app

According to media reports, Google is expected to incorporate several artificial intelligence (AI) features into its products, with the Gboard keyboard app for Android working to integrate Imagen, an AI-powered text-to-image generator. The latest beta version of Gboard, as per a recent APK teardown conducted by 9to5Google, contains lines of code that refer to an “Imagen Keyboard.” The Imagen feature is expected to appear in the shortcut strip/page, alongside other tools like Clipboard, Translate, and One-handed.

For users unfamiliar with Imagen, it is similar to DALL-E 2, a popular text-to-image generator owned by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Imagen is capable of generating images based on the requests submitted to it by users, as per the report. However, Google’s research has found that more people prefer the results produced by Imagen over DALL-E 2. The report further suggests that Imagen is better at handling spatial relations, long-form text, rare words, and challenging prompts, making it an exciting addition to the Gboard keyboard app.

As per the earlier mentioned report, Imagen is believed to be better equipped to handle spatial relations, long-form text, rare words, and challenging prompts. It is important to note that since APK teardowns focus on features that are under development, it is not a guarantee that they will make it into the final update.

In related news, earlier this month, Google unveiled its new AI service, Bard, which is aimed at competing against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The service has been made available to a select group of “trusted testers” before Google makes it more widely accessible to the public. The development of Bard is a testament to Google’s continued commitment to expanding its AI capabilities and integrating them into its products to improve the user experience.
