Mountain View, California: Google has introduced two major updates to its AI chatbot, Gemini, for Android users personalized responses and Temporary Chats. The personalization feature allows Gemini to reference previous conversations to provide replies tailored to a user’s preferences. In contrast, Temporary Chats let users hold private conversations that are excluded from personalization and AI training, making them ideal for sensitive topics.
Temporary Chats are stored on Google’s servers for up to 72 hours to process queries and feedback, after which they are deleted. This option will gradually become available to all users. It resembles the private chat mode offered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has been in place for some time.
Personalized Responses for Smarter Interactions
With personalized responses, Gemini can recall important details from earlier chats and integrate them into future answers. Users may even request the chatbot to reference older exchanges. For instance, if a past discussion included favorite comic book characters, Gemini could propose a themed birthday party with matching food and a custom photo booth.
This capability currently works only with the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the UK. Google plans to expand it to the 2.5 Flash model and additional regions in the near future. Once activated, the feature is enabled by default, but users can disable it in Settings > Personal Context > Your Past Chats with Gemini. Conversations can also be managed or deleted via Gemini Apps Activity.
Balancing Innovation with User Control
The company has not confirmed if these updates will reach the web version. These improvements reflect a broader trend in AI development, with platforms like Anthropic also offering memory-based personalization alongside privacy-focused chat modes. By combining personalization with privacy protections, Google is aiming to deliver more relevant, context-aware responses while ensuring users maintain control over their data.
