Google Delays Gemini 3.5 Pro AI Launch
Google has postponed the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro, its next frontier AI model, from June to July 2026. The company is using the additional time to gather feedback from early testers and fine-tune the system before a broader rollout. As competition in advanced AI intensifies, Google appears determined to ensure the model meets expectations before launch.
Google first introduced Gemini 3.5 Pro during its I/O developer conference in May. At the event, CEO Sundar Pichai indicated that the model would arrive the following month. However, the company continued development behind the scenes while selected users tested the model through Google’s experimental platforms.
Built for More Advanced AI Agents
Gemini 3.5 Pro represents Google’s most ambitious effort to strengthen AI reasoning and agent capabilities. Unlike conventional chat-focused models, it aims to handle complex, long-running tasks that require planning, memory, and multi-step decision-making. Consequently, the model targets enterprise users, developers, and organizations building autonomous AI systems.
The model is expected to feature a context window of up to two million tokens. As a result, it can process and retain significantly larger amounts of information than most competing systems. Google has also highlighted a reasoning feature called Deep Think, which is designed to improve performance on difficult problems that require extended analysis.
Meanwhile, the company has incorporated lessons learned from Gemini 3.5 Flash. Some users reported that Flash consumed large numbers of tokens during agent workflows. Therefore, Google has focused on improving efficiency and reducing unnecessary computational costs in the Pro version.
Competition Raises the Stakes
The delay arrives at a critical moment for Google’s AI strategy. OpenAI and Anthropic continue to advance their own frontier models, particularly in coding, reasoning, and enterprise applications. Therefore, expectations for Gemini 3.5 Pro remain exceptionally high.
Although Google has not provided a detailed explanation for the revised timeline, reports suggest the company wants additional real-world testing before making the model widely available. Furthermore, engineers are reportedly applying feedback from early deployments to improve reliability and performance.
At Google I/O, Sundar Pichai acknowledged that the model needed more time before release.
“Give us until next month to get it to you.”
For now, Gemini 3.5 Pro remains in limited preview. However, its eventual launch will play an important role in determining how effectively Google can compete in the rapidly evolving AI market.
