Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI Team Up with US Defence on AI for National Security

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has taken a major step to boost national security by awarding contracts to four leading AI companies: OpenAI, Google (Alphabet), Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI. Each contract is capped at $200 million and aims to accelerate the integration of advanced AI technologies into defence systems, the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) confirmed on Monday.

This initiative focuses on developing agentic AI systems autonomous software agents that can perform complex tasks independently. These systems will support both combat operations and broader enterprise functions. By doing so, the DoD seeks to maintain the United States’ technological edge amid growing global competition.

“These strategic partnerships will enhance the Department’s exposure to frontier AI technologies and allow participating firms to gain deeper insight into the unique challenges faced by national security agencies,” the CDAO said in an official statement.

Advanced AI to Support Combat and Enterprise Operations

Last month, the DoD announced a $200 million contract with OpenAI to develop high-level AI capabilities for mission-critical scenarios on and off the battlefield. Meanwhile, Anthropic, known for its focus on AI safety, joins the effort alongside Google’s DeepMind division, a pioneer in reinforcement learning and large language models.

Elon Musk’s xAI, a newer but ambitious player in the AI space, is also part of this national defence push. Together, these firms will help the Pentagon pioneer AI solutions that could shape future warfare. Additionally, the partnership aims to ensure secure, ethical, and mission-ready deployment of cutting-edge technologies.

Government Guidance Encourages Competitive AI Ecosystem

Recently, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget issued guidance urging federal departments to foster a competitive and innovative AI ecosystem in the United States. The administration emphasised that federal procurement should serve both national interests and public benefit.

By working with these high-profile AI companies, the Pentagon hopes to lead the way in AI-driven defence innovation, securing the country’s position in the evolving landscape of global technology.
