Google has introduced new upgrades to NotebookLM, its AI-powered note-taking and research assistant. The goal is to simplify complex research tasks and improve support for multiple file formats while keeping users focused within a single workspace.
Deep Research to Automate Online Investigations
The latest update adds Deep Research, an AI tool designed to automate complex online investigations. It takes a user’s question, forms a research plan, and browses the internet to gather high-quality information. After a few minutes, it generates a structured, source-grounded report that can be inserted directly into a notebook.
Because Deep Research operates in the background, users can continue building their notebooks at the same time. In addition, the platform offers two research styles: Deep Research for full analysis and Fast Research for quick searches.
Broader File Compatibility for Enhanced Workflow
NotebookLM now supports more document formats to streamline importing and summarizing information. Users can upload Google Sheets, Microsoft Word documents, and PDFs from Google Drive. Moreover, Drive links can be added as URLs for faster content access. Consequently, this expansion enables users to summarize spreadsheets, analyze larger collections of files, and paste multiple resources at once.
Continuous Expansion of NotebookLM Capabilities
Since its release in late 2023, NotebookLM has steadily gained new features to improve usability for students, professionals, and researchers. Video Overviews were added earlier to convert dense materials into visual presentations, while Audio Overviews produce podcast-style summaries.
The launch of mobile apps for Android and iOS further expanded access beyond the desktop. With the latest updates rolling out globally within a week, NotebookLM continues evolving into a more comprehensive research and knowledge-building ecosystem.
