US-Brazilian researcher Ben Goertzel, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) guru, has said that AI could replace up to 80% of human jobs in the coming years. Goertzel is a mathematician, cognitive scientist, and robot creator who is the founder and CEO of SingularityNET, a research group focused on creating “Artificial General Intelligence” (AGI) – AI with human cognitive abilities. Speaking at Web Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Goertzel claimed that AGI is just years away and that recent efforts to curb AI research are misguided.
Goertzel argues that for machines to be as smart and agile as people and deal with the unknown, they need to be able to take big leaps beyond their training and programming. He admits that AI systems are not there yet, but says there is reason to believe that it won’t be decades before we reach AGI. Goertzel believes that AGI is the way to create machines that can think like people and that are not only more efficient but also more creative. He believes AGI will change the way people live and work and unlock solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems.
Goertzel is known for his unconventional approach to AI and his work in creating human-like robots. He is a vocal advocate for expanding the scope of AI research and for collaborating across disciplines to make AGI a reality. While many worry that AI will lead to widespread unemployment and economic upheaval, Goertzel sees a future where AGI will create new jobs, solve problems, and lead to unprecedented advances in human knowledge and understanding. However, he also believes that people need to start thinking now about how to adapt to a world where machines are more intelligent than humans, and how to ensure that the benefits of AGI are shared fairly across society.
