Europe Launches 35 AI Supercomputers in Major Nvidia Expansion

NVIDIA has unveiled plans for 35 AI supercomputers currently under development across Europe, marking the continent’s largest annual expansion of supercomputing infrastructure. The systems will operate across national supercomputing centers, AI factories, and research institutions in 23 countries. As a result, more than 3 million researchers are expected to benefit from the new computing resources.

Built on Blackwell and Hopper platforms, these projects account for over 90% of Europe’s AI factory deployments. Moreover, Europe has deployed or announced 800 AI exaflops since last year, highlighting the region’s growing focus on advanced AI capabilities.

Major Projects Strengthen Research Capacity

Several large-scale installations are set to enhance Europe’s computing power. In Spain, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center will expand MareNostrum 5 with GB300 NVL72 and GB200 NVL4 systems. Consequently, the facility will deliver around 20 exaflops of AI training performance and 33 exaflops of AI inference performance.

Meanwhile, Italy’s IT4LIA project will deploy more than 8,000 GPUs, providing 82 exaflops of AI training performance. The system will support research in agritech, cybersecurity, meteorology, and manufacturing.

Germany is also advancing its AI infrastructure. HammerHAI, the country’s first AI factory, will install over 850 liquid-cooled GPUs at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart. Furthermore, BavariaAI’s Blue Swan project will add 1,000 GPUs across the FAU Erlangen and LRZ supercomputing centers.

Clean Energy and Quantum Research Gain Momentum

Beyond AI development, the new systems are accelerating innovation in energy and quantum computing. For example, Siemens Energy is using NVIDIA technologies to develop hydrogen-capable gas turbine burners. As a result, simulation times have been reduced by up to 77%.

At the same time, research organizations including Barcelona Supercomputing Center, CINECA, Fraunhofer, and Jülich Supercomputing Centre are integrating quantum processors with GPU systems through the CUDA-Q platform. Additionally, NVIDIA introduced its Vera Rubin scientific computing platform, which delivers more than 7 exaflops of AI performance within a single rack-scale system.

Overall, the deployment of 35 AI supercomputers reflects Europe’s increasing investment in sovereign AI infrastructure. Consequently, the region is strengthening its position in the global race for advanced computing and scientific innovation.
