Etihad Airways launches first NFT collection

Etihad Airways, an airline based in Abu Dhabi, is the most recent company in the UAE to get on the blockchain bandwagon by introducing its own non-fungible token (NFT) collection of 3D aircraft models.

Called the “EY-ZERO1,” the series will feature ten 3D aircraft models, each one showcasing a unique Etihad Boeing 787 Dreamliner livery, the company said in a release. Around 2003 collectibles will go on sale on July 21.

“We’re excited to launch our first NFT collection, EY-ZERO1, which not only offers collectors, aviation enthusiasts and travellers a unique work of art, but provides real-world travel and lifestyle benefits with Etihad Airways,” Tony Douglas, Group CEO at Etihad Aviation Group, said.

He added: “NFTs and other metaverse technologies are revolutionising the digital economy, and we are proud to be one of the first airlines in the world to explore their potential to provide additional utility for our customers.”

Owners of an NFT will immediately be enrolled to the airline’s silver tier membership for a year.

The digital collection will be minted on the Polygon blockchain, the Abu Dhabi carrier said, adding it will partner with Aerial.is to track the emissions of the NFTs. Proceeds will go to the procurement of sustainable aviation fuel in 2022.
