Dubai unveils inaugural autonomous electric abra

Dubai has introduced its first autonomous electric wooden abra, a traditional boat, in support of the emirate’s goals to reduce carbon emissions and advance self-driving transportation. The refurbished vessel recently embarked on a trial journey from Al Jadaf Station to Festival City Station on Dubai Creek. Manufactured at Dubai’s Al Garhoud Marine Maintenance Centre, the abra maintains the classic appearance of the popular boats seen cruising the creek while embracing a futuristic transport vision.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s aim to have 25% of all trips utilizing autonomous transport by 2030, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions in public transportation. The Autonomous Electric Abra offers several advantages, including zero carbon emissions, a 30% reduction in operating and maintenance costs compared to diesel-powered models, and noise elimination. Equipped with two electric motors, it achieves a maximum speed of seven knots (13 kph), operates autonomously using a control system, and utilizes four lithium batteries for a seven-hour operating time.

The development of the Autonomous Electric Abra involved the integration of advanced technologies, such as obstacle detection, autonomous route adherence, consideration of wind and wave factors, and the ability to notify the control centre of any system defect or deviation from the operating plan. The boat’s self-driving capabilities ensure that the captain’s role is mainly supervisory, intervening only when necessary.

Dubai’s transportation authority, RTA, has devised a comprehensive master plan to enhance marine transport in the emirate. The plan includes the expansion of traditional abra stations, increased capacity, utilization of advanced technologies for cost reduction and asset lifespan improvement, enhanced lighting, and provision of customer facilities and investment areas. This latest introduction of the autonomous electric abra represents another step in the modernization of Dubai’s beloved traditional boats, following previous upgrades to improve safety standards and accessibility.
