Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed the installation of solar energy systems at 22 of its facilities. This move marks a major step toward achieving the emirate’s long-term environmental goals. Notably, the project supports several key strategies, including the Zero-Emissions Strategy 2050, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030.
By generating an estimated 32 million kilowatt-hours annually, the solar panels will significantly cut emissions—around 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. According to RTA’s Director of Buildings and Facilities, Shaikha Ahmad Al Shaikh, this initiative reflects Dubai’s broader vision to embrace renewable energy and reduce its environmental impact. Furthermore, the energy produced will help offset conventional electricity usage, contributing to cleaner, more sustainable urban infrastructure.
Tailored Installations Across Key Transport Facilities
The solar systems have been strategically installed across a variety of RTA facilities. These include bus depots in Al Quoz, Al Khawaneej, and Al Rowaiyah, as well as stations in Al Satwa and Oud Metha. Metro depots and maintenance workshops in Al Muhaisnah are also part of the network. Importantly, each system has been customised to meet the specific operational needs and environmental conditions of its site.
The RTA followed the installation standards set by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), ensuring safe and efficient deployment. Moreover, the project utilises DEWA’s Shams Dubai Calculator, allowing real-time monitoring of power generation and system performance at each location. This not only improves energy tracking but also ensures that each system runs at peak efficiency.
Clean Energy for a Greener Future
RTA’s solar project reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability. More than just a technical upgrade, it sets an example for how public infrastructure can contribute to national clean energy goals. As urban populations grow, efforts like these are increasingly vital. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, the RTA is helping lay the groundwork for a more resilient and eco-friendly transport system.
In the long term, such initiatives will not only lower emissions but also encourage the wider adoption of green technologies across public and private sectors in Dubai.
