Dubai’s electricity authority has introduced an innovative smart solution to improve the design and planning of electricity distribution networks, with a focus on efficient 11kV network planning. As a result, the solution enhances design efficiency while also reducing time and costs. Moreover, it strengthens the reliability and sustainability of the electricity distribution system. At the same time, it supports wider efforts to advance innovation and digital applications in the energy sector. Currently, the solution is being implemented within the Power and Water Planning Division.
Through this initiative, digital innovation has been embedded as a core pillar in energy sector planning and operations. In addition, multiple data sources are transformed into practical and usable tools. Consequently, decision-making processes become more effective, and overall performance efficiency improves.
Vision-driven digital integration
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO, said that, “In line with the vision of the wise leadership to strengthen the integration of advanced technologies across key sectors to boost productivity and improve service efficiency, we have developed this smart solution, which reflects DEWA’s approach to embedding digital innovation as a core pillar in the development of planning and operations in the energy sector. By transforming multiple data sources into practical tools, the solution supports decision-making and improves performance efficiency.”
Designing electricity distribution networks using advanced software solutions reduces the time required to prepare plans and lowers associated costs. Additionally, it enhances design accuracy and flexibility. As a result, the electricity network is better prepared to keep pace with rapid urban and economic growth. These efforts also align with the vision to build smart and sustainable infrastructure that supports long-term strategic goals in sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence.
Tangible results and future readiness
The smart solution consists of advanced software that creates two dedicated databases linked to network design software. As a result, end users can design 11kV networks more efficiently. The system gathers data from peak load sheets, the SAP system, and master single-line diagrams. Then, this data is analyzed and consolidated into a unified format. Consequently, it supports the preparation of accurate, clear, and efficient electricity network designs.
Implementation has already delivered measurable benefits. For instance, planning and design costs have been reduced, while processing times have become shorter. In addition, electricity distribution network designs are now more streamlined and efficient. These improvements have enhanced engineering quality and supported service continuity in line with high standards.
Abdulla Al Aghbari, Acting Executive Vice President of Power and Water Planning, noted that the advanced software provides planning teams with an effective tool by integrating data from multiple sources into a single platform. Al Aghbari explained that the solution accelerates and improves design processes, supports more efficient planning decisions, enhances grid resilience, and helps meet future growth requirements.
Overall, this achievement reflects a continued commitment to organizational innovation and employee-led digital solutions. Furthermore, it reinforces leadership in developing a smart, reliable, and sustainable electricity distribution network aligned with future ambitions.
