Renewable Energy Projects by DEWA will go a long way

DEWA goes a long way for climate change

On World Environment Day, celebrated under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration,” HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), emphasized the UAE’s leadership in climate action. Additionally, he highlighted the UAE’s major projects aimed at increasing the share of clean and renewable energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency. These efforts align with the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. By 2050, Dubai aims to produce 100% of its energy from clean sources.

Thanks to the visionary leadership of the UAE, the country has become a global leader in renewable energy. Significant achievements have been made in reducing emissions from the energy sector. The Statistical Review of World Energy by the UK-based Energy Institute revealed that the UAE is one of the top countries using solar energy. Remarkably, the UAE ranks as the 6th highest per capita consumer of solar energy globally.

DEWA’s key projects include the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world. The solar park’s production capacity will exceed 5,000MW by 2030, using both photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power (CSP). This project will significantly reduce carbon emissions, cutting over 6.5 million tonnes annually.

Additionally, DEWA is pioneering a green hydrogen project at the solar park. This initiative aims to position the UAE as a global competitor in the green hydrogen market. The hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, the first of its kind in the GCC, will generate 250MW of electricity using water stored in the Hatta Dam. Furthermore, DEWA is constructing a water desalination project in Hassyan using Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology. By 2030, DEWA aims to produce 100% of desalinated water using clean energy.

Finally, DEWA’s EV Green Charger Initiative has created an extensive network of over 700 electric vehicle charging stations, promoting green mobility across Dubai. DEWA’s annual Sustainability Report, based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, transparently outlines these achievements and efforts.
