Perplexity has made its Comet browser available globally for free. Since its initial release to Max subscribers three months ago, millions have joined the waitlist. Consequently, the company now hopes to position Comet against major browsers and search engines.
Features and plans
The browser includes a sidecar assistant that helps while you browse. For free users, the sidecar remains the primary hands-on feature. Additionally, all users can access tools like Discover, Spaces, Shopping, Travel, Finance, and Sports. A standalone Comet Plus subscription will cost $5 per month. Moreover, Pro and Max subscribers receive Comet Plus automatically. Max subscribers pay $200 per month and unlock higher-performance AI models.
Background assistant and competition
Max subscribers also gain access to an email assistant that drafts replies and manages inboxes. Furthermore, Max subscribers get early access to new features and products. One such feature is a background assistant that runs tasks while you work. For example, the assistant can compose an email, add event tickets to a cart, and book flights. Users can monitor task progress via a central dashboard and intervene when needed. Additionally, the assistant can connect with other apps on the computer, improving task reach. Still, competition from established browsers and newcomers will force Comet to demonstrate reliable, tangible productivity gains.
