OpenAI has made internet search available to all ChatGPT users, signaling an intensified competition with Google in the search engine space. Initially rolled out to paying subscribers in October, the search feature now enables free users to access real-time information and “fast, timely answers” along with references to web sources.
OpenAI’s integration of search into ChatGPT provides a streamlined, ad-free experience akin to Google’s interface but with conversational AI responses. Users can activate the feature via a search icon or set it as a default option.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, stated, “We’re bringing search to all logged-in free users of ChatGPT globally, on every platform where you use ChatGPT.” The rollout to millions of users is expected to elevate ChatGPT’s utility as a real-time information hub.
The addition of search functionality positions OpenAI as a stronger competitor against Google and Microsoft, whose AI-powered search solutions blend web results with AI-generated responses. OpenAI, backed by major investors like Microsoft, Nvidia, and SoftBank, has achieved a valuation of $157 billion and is now focusing on expanding its user base with cutting-edge features like integrated search.
