OpenAI released an upgraded version of ChatGPT Images on December 17, introducing GPT Image 1.5 to significantly enhance AI-based image creation and editing. The update is rolling out globally to all ChatGPT users and API customers. As a result, users can expect faster generation, more accurate edits, and stronger preservation of original image details.
Faster generation and smarter image creation
First, the new ChatGPT Images model allows users to generate images from scratch or refine existing visuals with higher precision. At the same time, image generation now runs up to four times faster. Moreover, the model maintains consistency in lighting, composition, and subject appearance across edits. In addition, a dedicated Images space inside ChatGPT offers preset styles, filters, and prompts, which makes creative exploration more efficient.
More precise editing and improved creativity
Meanwhile, instruction-following accuracy has improved, so edits now affect only the requested elements. Consequently, users can apply realistic photo adjustments, believable clothing or hairstyle changes, and cleaner stylistic transformations. Furthermore, the model supports advanced edits such as adding, removing, blending, or rearranging elements without reducing image quality. Likewise, creative transformations benefit from better layout handling and improved text rendering, especially for smaller or denser text.
API improvements and broader availability
At the same time, GPT Image 1.5 is available through the API with the same quality upgrades. In particular, it offers stronger image preservation and better brand consistency, which supports marketing, logo design, and e-commerce catalogs. Additionally, OpenAI reduced image input and output costs by 20 percent, allowing higher output within existing budgets. Finally, the model is available globally across ChatGPT and the API without manual selection, while the earlier version remains accessible as a custom option.
