ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize politics; cases reveal

ChatGPT, the AI language model developed by OpenAI, has become an increasingly popular tool for politicians seeking to score points or generate original ideas for speeches and even laws. However, experts warn that the rapid uptake of the technology should be approached with caution, as the tool is also famous for fabricating “facts.” While ChatGPT can be useful for generating cliches and other common political phrases, it can also introduce new and creative ideas that may have potential value in policy-making.

The recent use of ChatGPT in politics has been particularly prominent in the United States, where politicians have used the tool to draft bills and speeches. Congresswoman Nancy Mace gave a five-minute speech at a Senate committee, where every single word was generated by ChatGPT. Similarly, local US politician Barry Finegold claimed that his team had used ChatGPT to draft a bill for the Massachusetts Senate, which introduced original ideas aimed at reining in the power of chatbots and AI.

While ChatGPT has been successful in generating legal texts and introducing original ideas, experts warn against over-reliance on technology. Anne Meuwese from Leiden University conducted an experiment with ChatGPT and found that the bot introduced new and creative ideas. However, she also warns against lawmakers relying too heavily on the tool and that caution should be taken when using it in policy-making. The potential for ChatGPT to be used to generate disinformation or fabricate “facts” also needs to be carefully considered in its uptake.
