Burjeel Launches AI-Powered Cath Labs Across UAE
Burjeel Holdings has introduced AI-powered catheterisation laboratories (Cath Labs) at two UAE hospitals. The facilities operate at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi and Burjeel Speciality Hospital in Sharjah.
The launch expands Burjeel’s capabilities in cardiovascular care and image-guided interventions. Additionally, the new facilities aim to support complex procedures through artificial intelligence, advanced imaging, and real-time procedural guidance.
The Cath Labs use Siemens Healthineers’ ARTIS icono.vision platform. The system combines AI-assisted imaging, high-definition visuals, advanced 3D visualisation, and automated workflows.
Consequently, physicians can obtain clearer views of complex anatomy during demanding procedures. The technology also helps clinical teams manage radiation exposure and contrast use.
AI Imaging Supports Complex Cardiovascular Procedures
A central feature of the platform is OPTIQ AI, which analyses live images and dynamically adjusts imaging parameters. Moreover, the system reduces background noise in real time across different imaging modes and body areas.
This capability helps maintain image quality at lower radiation doses. Therefore, it supports the ALARA principle, which calls for radiation exposure to remain as low as reasonably achievable while preserving necessary image quality.
The platform also provides 200-degree rotational 3D imaging and rapid 3D image acquisition. In addition, its flexible ceiling-rail positioning and positioning precision of better than 0.5 millimetres give physicians greater control during interventions.
The facilities will support several medical specialities, including:
- Interventional cardiology and structural heart services.
- Vascular surgery and interventional radiology.
- Neurointerventional procedures and pain management.
- Interventional oncology and advanced aortic repairs.
Furthermore, clinicians can use the system for complex coronary interventions, chronic total occlusion procedures, peripheral vascular therapies, and embolisation. These capabilities extend its applications across cardiovascular and other image-guided treatments.
Burjeel Expands Advanced Care and Treatment Capacity
The new facilities will help both hospitals manage more complex cases and address growing demand for specialised care. At Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, the new Cath Lab doubles existing Cath Lab capacity. Consequently, the hospital expects to accommodate more procedures and expand access to advanced cardiovascular services.
Dr Georgie Thomas, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Department at Burjeel Hospital Abu Dhabi, said the technology provides clearer imaging and guidance during complex interventions.
He added that the system helps clinicians manage radiation and contrast use. Meanwhile, the additional capacity will allow the hospital to treat more patients and offer a wider range of advanced procedures.
Burjeel’s broader cardiovascular programme includes coronary angiography, angioplasty, stenting, structural heart interventions, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, and rehabilitation. In addition, the hospital recently received American Heart Association Chest Pain accreditation.
Overall, the launch strengthens Burjeel’s investment in specialised cardiovascular care across Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. It also reflects the growing use of AI-assisted imaging and robotics in minimally invasive medical procedures.
