Apple unveils cutting-edge accessibility and speech features for iPhones, iPads, and Macs at WWDC 2023

Apple has provided a preview of its upcoming accessibility features, set to be released later this year, ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). These enhancements will encompass cognitive, vision, hearing, and mobility accessibility, as well as tools for non-speaking individuals or those at risk of losing their ability to speak. The features will be available on Apple’s iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple’s collaboration with community groups representing various users with disabilities plays a significant role in the development of these accessibility features, aiming to have a meaningful impact on people’s lives. With more than one billion people globally living with disabilities, which accounts for approximately 15% of the population, technology can play a transformative role in enhancing communication and daily activities for this significant minority.

Apple, alongside other companies, has been actively researching and integrating advanced accessible technology into its devices. The forthcoming accessibility services build upon Apple’s longstanding commitment to making technology inclusive for all users, allowing everyone to create, communicate, and pursue their passions. Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized the importance of technology being designed to cater to everyone’s needs.

One of the features, Assistive Access, will provide a personalized experience for calls and the FaceTime app, which have been merged into a single app called “Calls.” The feature will also extend to Messages, Cameras, Photos, and Music. It will offer a distinctive interface with high-contrast buttons, large text labels, and tools for trusted supporters to customize the experience for the individual they assist. For instance, within Messages, users can opt for visual communication using an emoji-only keyboard or record video messages.
